Welcome,
My name is Michael Lambert and I am a professional school counselor. I have created this site to inform you of my professional experiences in education and counseling and to share my passion for serving students by helping them meet their academic and personal goals. I will use this site to highlight my professional capabilities and competencies as a licensed school counselor.
About me
I graduated from Saint John's University with a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology in 2009. I spent the following year in Tsu City Japan teaching English. I taught students of all ages ranging from elementary, middle and high school students up to middle and senior aged students. I loved being able to help my students feel a great sense of pride and accomplishment when they made strides in their English abilities. I especially enjoyed getting to talk with them about their goals and what they hoped to do with their English ability. Many wished to travel or even to study abroad where they could use and further their English skills. As I continued to help my students prepare for their future goals, I knew then that I wanted to continue to work with students in this supportive capacity.
Upon returning to the United States, I worked as an after school homework club site coordinator for Human Solutions in Portland, OR. I worked with many of the families living in low income housing being served by Human Solutions. A large portion of the families I worked with also immigrated to the United States from various countries including Somalia, Russia, Ukraine and Mexico. I found my time in this role to be invaluable as I gained an important understanding of their unique experiences and how I could advocate most effectively for their needs to support such ethnically and socioeconomically diverse populations. Building from my experience in Japan, I found a tremendous amount of fulfillment in offering support to disadvantaged students who need a supportive voice. Using my passion for helping students reach their goals and advocating for those students with fewer opportunities as my guide, I decided to pursue a career as a school counselor by enrolling in Portland State University's counselor education graduate program.
As a transformed school counselor training program, Portland State University has prepared me with exceptional graduate coursework and training experiences. I have been educated and trained with a focus on advocacy, leadership, collaboration, counseling, consultation, and use of data which are essential skills a school counselor utilizes to identify and remove barriers preventing student academic success. During the three year program, I have completed a clinical counseling practicum experience and am currently interning at Centennial High School (Gresham, OR.) and Metzger Elementary School ( Tigard, OR.). At each school I work with students on a variety of topics. Individually I help students prepare students for life after high school. That is the work I really enjoy; I love learning about what motivates a student and how I can help them find the path that will lead them to their life goals.
I invite you to explore my website further, learn more about me and my experiences in education and counseling and feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments for me.
Thank you,
Michael Lambert
