As part of my graduate school training at Portland State University's CACREP accredited counseling program, I completed a 40 hour counseling practicum. I saw clients at Portland State's community clinic which serves clients from the community at low client cost. Under the supervision of a peer and a faculty member, I completed my 40 hours of counseling experience over six months. I saw three clients once a week in 50 minute sessions. For the following six months I supervised an incoming peer as they began their practicum experience. Between my time as a counselor in training and a peer supervisor I took on various duties including:
- Working with clients on a host of issues including general stress/anxiety, generalized and severe depression, interpersonal difficulties involving family and/or friends, grief and loss, stress and anxiety regarding career and work, and substance abuse.
- Employed various counseling strategies including brief solution-focused therapy, cognitive therapy, narrative therapy and career exploration.
- Maintained client paperwork and files.
- Facilitating suicide assessments and creating safety plans.
- Collaborated with faculty and peer supervisor on treatment plans.
- Providing supervision for a peer in the practicum experience.
