Since 2012, I have been a part of the Metro Toy Drive and the Child Heroes Program. The Metro Toy Drive was created to be a year round toy drive which then provides toys to families and various donation agencies to give to families with kids in need of support during the holiday season. My role has been primarily in helping with and managing the Child Heroes program. We work with six wonderful youth volunteers to organize and run toy collection events during in December and plan and facilitate a toy distribution day in which families come to receive toys to bring home for the holidays. Our Child Heroes collect an average of 800 toys each year at their collection days and donate as many to families in need. In addition to those events, the Heroes also participate in community giving efforts and promote the toy drive. Through this process our students learn essential skills in organization and planning and most of all, they learn the gift of giving and always express their sense of fulfillment in being able to help those in need.
