Academic Development
Skills and Practices
(A) Conducts programs designed to enhance student academic development;
In my work as a homework club site coordinator for Human Solutions, I worked with students and families living on low incomes. A primary part
of my work involved creating unique activities, organizing community family nights, and finding educationally enriching activities in the community for field trips. In each of these endeavors , I focused on providing over wise unavailable opportunities for the students who may not have the means to visit museums or other programming due to financial reasons. The links to the left show group activities I created, family nights I organized and field trips I set up. |
In my elementary internship I worked with students in groups. In talking with the counselor
and teachers, I identified students that could benefit from social skill building opportunities and formed grade level Lunch Bunch groups in order to provide such opportunities for learning. An agenda for a Lunch Bunch group can be found in the link to the left. |
Many students I worked with at my high school internship site struggled to keep
up with academic demands due to an unclear idea of tasks ahead of them. This could often be due to a lack of organization. To help these students I worked with them to create an action plan and organizational system which can be found in the link to the left. |
(B) Implements strategies and activities to prepare students for a full range of post-secondary options and opportunities; and
|
At my high school internship site, we organized a college/career day experience
for our freshman students. While ninth graders are in general not thinking about post-secondary options at the early stage of their high school career, we think it is beneficial to expose them to the post-secondary options available to them so that they can begin preparing and know what is required to pursue such options. We took our freshman students on field trips to various colleges to learn about what is available to them. I went to the freshman English classes to present the career and inform the students about the options. |
While at Centennial High School, I also helped to introduce
junior students to the Oregon university system and invite them to join the assembly when each university and local community colleges visit the high school to talk about each school and what the next steps are to apply for admission. I organized the classroom presentation schedule to inform all junior students about the OUS visit. |
In order to advocate for the post-secondary options available to all
student populations, especially those that are often limited in options, I worked to make sure that all groups are given meaningful information and support to pursue all options available to them. I was able to work with a teen parenting class to give information on college options and financial aid and scholarships available to finance a college education. My presentation material can be found via the link to the left. |
At Centennial High School, we offer a full range of academic courses and expereinces for students to choose from. One option available to students
is our Center for Advanced Learning and our ACE Academy which are half day alternative placements where students learn hands on skills for specific careers in the medical and trade fields. With many students I worked with I learned about their post-secondary goals and introduced CAL and ACE to them as helpful learning opportunities to help them reach their goals. |
(C) Implements differentiated instructional strategies that draw on subject matter and pedagogical content knowledge and skills to promote student achievement.
I completed a student teaching practicum for my graduate studies in which I taught
7th grade science. I have shared my lessons via the link to the left. In creating my lesson plans I focused on matching my lesson content with the state academic standards for 7th grade science. I also considered alternative teaching strategies I could use to ensure that all students successfully grasp the material. |

In my position as a cello teacher, I have worked to develop a comprehensive curriculum for beginning students ages 6-9. While I follow the curriculum with my students, I also tailor it to fit the individual educational needs of each student. I focus on the specific skills that the student is lacking and needing to work on and manage the pace for each student so that we are introducing new material to keep the students interest while not skimming over important material which would strengthen essential skills. An example of my tailored lesson notes for a student can be found via the link to the left.
